Milestones
Milestones are checkpoints or targets in a release—for example, “M1” for a first deployment wave, or a customer-site–based target. They help you track when key deliverables are due and align release topics with specific goals or environments.
Why milestones matter
- Clear targets – Each milestone represents a concrete point in the release (e.g. a go-live date or a phase gate).
- Visibility in release topics – Release topics have a Milestones tab so you can see and manage which milestones are tied to that topic and their dates.
- Export and planning – In the Release Planner format, each exported plan includes a milestone (or
milestone_name) identifier—often a customer site ID or a label like"M1"—so plans can be shared and used by other tools.
Where milestones appear
| Place | How milestones are used |
|---|---|
| Release topic | The Milestones tab on a release topic shows the milestones associated with that topic and their dates. |
| Release Planner export | The exported JSON includes a milestone identifier (e.g. milestone_name: "M1" or a customer site ID) so each plan is tied to a specific milestone. |
| Customer sites | When exporting from a customer site, the milestone in the export is typically that customer site’s ID, linking the plan to that deployment target. |
Defining and using milestones
- In the app – Define and manage milestones in the context of release topics (e.g. on the Milestones tab) and, where applicable, link them to customer sites or phases.
- In exports – When you export in Release Planner format, the milestone field identifies which target or wave the plan belongs to, so stakeholders and tools can tell plans apart and track them correctly.
For the exact schema and fields (including milestone) in the Release Planner format, see Release Planning and the Release Planner repository.
